With only four hours in my house after arriving back from Vegas &
NAB, I went to Sheffield to use my edit suite on the 2007 World
Snooker Championship for the BBC. How close was I to the venue? This
close!
You might recognise my edit suite from the Tour de France
and if you have good eyesight you might notice my new MacPro
sitting on the left in the picture at the bottom of this page. Just before Sheffield I put another four gig of
ram in making the total 6. I noticed the speed increase immediately,
just an estimate but I think there is a 3-4 times speed increase over
my G5
My job as usual is to edit VT packages and design graphical
elements for the shows. Sometimes we are on air for up to 9 hours a day
on both BBC1 & BBC2 so you can imagine there is a fair bit of
editing to do. On the left you can see the graphic intro for the
trickshot series that runs everyday. Notice the lightsources on the
sign :)
Not only do I spend quite a bit of time with a rather clever new graphics program, but I also do quite a bit of straight FCP editing too. One great package that was edited on site was a discussion with Joe Simpson who was the guy on the end of the rope in the book and the film, Touching the Void. He now lives in Sheffield. I've read the book and seen the film, but his description of what happened was riveting, he even cracked a joke at the end! I'm very pleased with the draw that I designed and update on a daily if not hourly basis. Designing something that looks good is hard, designing something that doesn't take an age to render is a different matter. It takes all your Motion experience to hone the project that doesn't come to a crawl when rendering. Now imagine what went through my mind when the boss said he wanted a different style for the quarter finals! Well, after much headscratching, I rebuit the draw in, erhem a 3D application that was running on my MacPro. I was worried about rendering as the balls are stacked up in 3D space and the camera travels down them. No need to worry though, this thing plays back in real time and renders in 3 minutes. This is with the ATI card
Just one bit of info too, I am playing with a beta version of a plugin that Noise Industries has given me to test. Lets just say I think it's pretty cool and no doubt will be using it on the snooker. Oh and next time I take a shot of my edit suite, remind me to tidy up first!
I thought I'd post a quick video of some of the graphics I made too, enjoy!

![]() written by jim on May 14, 2007 ah how lucky are you to play with new toys. looks good , but i think my system at home rivals yours minus the xserve.jk written by Peter Wiggins on May 14, 2007 Having my MacPro this year was a real advantage because it meant i could render or digitise whilst working on graphics. The MP is hidden behind the LHS wall. It was really amazing to see the speed difference between the two - the MP will become my main workstation over the next month in preparation for the Tour de France. Peter ps i need to fix this cursor colour! Write comment
