Ok, so what the hell is a Fractal? Well, listen carefully because here comes the science bit. A fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole"

fractal_1_web.jpgWell, you can now generate fractals in Motion by using a free plugin which you can download from here. I have to confess that when I started to play with this plugin I had forgotten that I had forgotten so much about maths and geometry that I had to take a quick refresher course held by Professor Wikipedia. The one you see on the left is a Benoît Mandelbrot fractal, named after the Franco-American mathematician who first used the term.

fractal_2_web.jpgThere are two fractal types in the plugin that can be modified, the one on the right here uses the second setting and is rather curiously named 'Julia'. So you can see you can generates some fairly complex patterns easily. Thats not a Fractal's best party trick though. If you animate the zoom control in the plugin, the pattern will keep having more detail as it enlarges as it always subdivides. Something that's easier to demonstrate than describe, so take a look at this Julia fractal movie I rendered out from Motion. There is no zooming of the layer, this all takes place within the plugin.

So there you go, fractals in Motion, I can't really think of an immediate use for them and this plugin only has two different pattern settings, but it should keep you quiet for half an hour whilst zooming in or out of Mandlebrots.

Following the link on the download page led me to the Author's website- only problem is that it is all in Polish! Also if you missed the plugin link it s here VM Fractals 1.0.1 too

Pretty nifty- not as robust as with AE fractals but certainly a step in the right direction- Thanks for the link!

I wonder how hard it would be to fractalize in 3D space? or as a particle with a breed rate and lifespan?

i installed this plugin but how do i use it in the motion interface? the 3rd party filters is blank.

Nate,

These will appear in the generators section, not 3rd party - those are for AE filters only
